Allene Hulen

Funeral services for Allene L. Hulen, age 100, of Sulphur Springs will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at First Baptist Church, Spence Chapel, with Rev. Mark Bryant and Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery, in Deport, with Gregg Price, Ralph Preuss, Carl Bryan, Clayton McGraw, Wayne Galyean, Robert Stidham, Johnny Gibson, Roy King, Robert Carpenter and Paul Stewart serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Ron Paulson, Jay Owens, Bill Wiler, David Hogan, Bill D'Lizarga, Ed I. Palmer, Charles Boulding, Ricky Landers, Arnie Burton, James Terry, Jim Thompson, and Charlie Charles. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday August 30, 2010 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Allene L. Hulen passed away Friday evening, August 27, 2010, at Rock Creek Health & Rehab. She was born in Deport, on March 7, 1910, the daughter of Robert Lee Loven and Oma Ann (Bean) Loven. She married Marion "Pete" Hulen in Deport on June 24, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. Hulen was a retired teacher, bookkeeper and worked for Hulen Photography. She graduated from Deport High School and received a teachers certificate and graduated with honors. She was a charter member of Deport Chapter No. 1045 of the Eastern Star and she was the past worthy matron. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The City of Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County named Allene Hulen Day and she was outstanding citizen of Hopkins County, an East Texas Teachers' College beauty queen, a contestant in the Rock Creek beauty contest and she was a tennis champion of Lamar County in High School.
Survivors include: son, James Hulen and wife Pat, of Sulphur Springs; two grandchildren; brother, Hobert Loven of Deport and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brother, James Paul Loven. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
