Funeral services for Ethel May Newkirk, age 99, of Sulphur Springs, will be conducted at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel, at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, October 31, 2010, with Rev. Bruce Stinson officiating. Interment will follow at Caney Cemetery, with Thurman Newkirk, Jr., Johnny Morris, Steve Skeen, Russell Skeen, Darrell Butler and Jesse Butler serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Newkirk's grandsons and great-grandsons. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Ethel May Newkirk passed away Thursday, October 28, 2010, at Carriage House Manor. She was born in Jackson County, Alabama, on February 22, 1911, the daughter of Albert Johnson and Hester Willbanks Johnson. She married Leonard Allen Newkirk in Hopkins County, on July 2, 1931. He preceded her in death in 1981. Mrs. Newkirk was a retired nurse and a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: son, Thurman Newkirk and wife, Ruby Nell, of Sulphur Springs; two daughters, Pearl Skeen Walthall of Antlers, Oklahoma and Carylon Kirkpatrick Ethridge and husband Phillip, of Greenville; grandchildren, Ray Nell Newkirk, Dearease Newkirk, Thurman Newkirk, Jr., Vickey Hendersn, Margaret Pope, Helen Kay Pope, Randy Pope, Cheryl Morris, Stacey Howk. Erica Moore, Walt Newkirk, Dale Skeen, Steve Skeen, Virginia Skeen, Russell Skeen, Amy Kirkpatrick, Cindy Butler and Pam Butler; 53 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Thelma Pope and Alyene Poe; son, James Newkirk; brother, Charlie Walker; sister, Lieana Ray; granddaughter, Juanza George and great-grandson, John Allen Morris. Memorials may be made to Caney Cemetery Association or Gideon Bibles.
