Funeral services for Floviece Craig, age 93, will be held at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010, with Rev. Bruce Stinson officiating. Interment will be held at Emblem Cemetery with Olen Petty, Ron Plaxco, Chris Boyd, James Kerbow, David Kerbow, and Butch Huddleston serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. To 8 p.m. Monday, July 26, 2010 at Murray- Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emblem Cemetery Association.
Floviece passed away at Carriage House Manor Sunday morning, July 25, 2010. She was born August 21, 1916, in Peerless, Texas, the daughter of James Laffette and Georgia Delpha Newkirk Kerbow. She attended East Texas State University, paying her expenses by picking cotton and doing housework. After earning a Masters degree in Education, Mrs. Craig taught at many area schools, including Gafford Chapel, Willow Oak, Emblem, and North Hopkins. She is remembered fondly by her former students.
She married Harlan Craig in Hugo, Oklahoma, on March 8, 1939. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Craig worked alongside her husband, Harlan Craig -- first on their cotton farm and later on their dairy and ranch. She loved the land, and was active in the cause of soil conservation. Her skills caring for sick livestock earned her the nickname "Doc." Mrs. Craig also loved reading, gardening, cooking, and crafts. Her strong work ethic and her love of learning were evident throughout her life, and she instilled these values in her daughter and grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Craig; five brothers: Tobe, Connie, Gene, "Bud", and Norris Kerbow; and one sister. Miriam Eppes. She is survived by her daughter Virginia Petty and husband Olen of Goldthwaite,Texas; grandson Craig Pense of Emblem, Texas; granddaughter Melanie Boyd and husband Chris of Austin, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
