Listen to Obituary

James (Jim) Robert Reed, 72, of Cumby, TX, woke up at the feet of Jesus on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

Jim was born on September 3, 1953, in Jacksonville, TX, to Raymond and Dolores Reed. He was a 1972 graduate of Cy-Fair High School in Houston, TX, and later received his degree in criminal justice from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. He was retired from the maintenance department of Cumby Collegiate School District.

Jim was an exceptionally skilled carpenter and woodsmith. His creations are in homes and at campsites all over the country. While he was passionate about his trade, his true joy was in the satisfaction that his customers and friends had when he brought their mental concept to life. Jim was a loyal, compassionate man who found a friend in almost anyone he met. When he wasn’t in his woodshop, he loved travelling throughout Texas visiting his friends and family, winning gumbo competitions with his gumbo team, and attending any event his grandchildren were a part of.

Jim’s recent, and most important, passion was his relationship with God. He dedicated his life to Christ in December of 2025 and had a hunger to learn as much as he could about his Savior. He never missed a Sunday service, and recently became a regular at Wednesday night bible study, at Top Rail Cowboy Church in Greenville.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Dolores Reed.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters Megan Petty, and her fiancé Michael Remick, of Commerce, and Brenna Armstrong of Wichita Falls; grandsons James (JT) Petty and Michael Petty, both of Cumby; granddaughters Alexus Roberson of Lubbock and Montana Theurer of Wichita Falls; his sister, Annie Reed; his niece Allison Risbergs and her husband Eddie; along with numerous cousins, extended family, and family of choice who will remember him fondly.

A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends at Top Rail Cowboy Church (262 Horseman’s Road, Greenville, TX, 75401), on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are invited to join the family for a meal at the church after the service.
