Funeral services for Kathryn Janette (Katie) Powell, age 71, of Sulphur Springs will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Tarrant officiating. Private interment will follow in the Cumby City Cemetery. No formal visitation.
Kathryn Janette Powell passed away early Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Rock Creek Health and Rehab. She was born in Hunt County on February 18, 1939 the daughter of Otis Pierce (Smiley) and Henrietta Little Powell. She was a retired School Teacher and Administrator. She earned a B.S. from East Texas State University in Commerce and a double masters from Arizona and Colorado. Kathryn taught over 26 years at the Chinle Unified School District in Chinle, AZ. After her retirement in 1997, the new vocational building in the school district was named after her. Kathryn love was for the Navajo Indian Reservation in Chinle, AZ she spent many hours teaching the Navajo Children. Because of her love for the Navajo Children, her family is requesting that memorial be made to the Navajo Indians Reservation in Chinle, Az for education of the children.
Survivors include two nieces, Linda Mathes and husband, Bryan of Sulphur Springs, and Theressa Kothmann & husband, Dr. Kirk S. of Bulverde; nephew, John Powell & wife, LaWana of Sulphur Springs; six great-nieces, LaShay Powell, Whitney Kothmann, Stephanie Kothmann, Kimberley Mathes, Kacie Mathes and Seanda Westbrook; three great-nephews, Shane Powell, Jeremy Bennett, Kyle Mathes; two sister-in-laws, Lenora Powell and Sharlyn Vaughn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Tommy and Billy Wayne Powell; niece, Susan Bennett, and great-nephew, Chris Bennett.
