Funeral services for LaVerne Pickett Leaton, age 89, of Sulphur Springs will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 31, 2010 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at City Cemetery, with Eric Martin, Lance Martin, Ryan Boyd, Matt Yosten, Andy Chester and Robert Cook serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
LaVerne Pickett Leaton passed away Tuesday morning, May 25, 2010 at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Sulphur Springs on March 31, 1921, the daughter of James Miles Pickett and Lillie (Fleming) Pickett. She married W. H. Ratliff; he preceded her in death. She married L. L. (Joe) Leaton; he preceded her in death. Mrs. Leaton was a retired accountant and bookkeeper , having worked for Red Star Fertilizer, Coastal Chemical, City National Bank and Peoples National Bank. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include: son, Joe B. Boyd of Stanley, Virginia; daughter, Cathey Martin and husband, Earl, of Sulphur Springs; stepson, Leslie Leaton and wife, Mona, of Longview; two stepdaughters, Sonya Morley and husband, Ike, of Highland Village and Tiger Leaton of Australia; grandchildren, Eric Martin and wife, Nancy, Lance Martin and wife, Jennifer, Ryan Boyd and Lauren Boyd; great-grandchildren, Kobe Martin and Katie Armstrong. She was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one stepdaughter.
