Funeral services for Mrs. Martha "Edna" Garvin, age 92, of Sulphur Springs will be conducted in the Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel, at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 18, 2009, with Rev. Horace Hammand officiating. A eulogy will be given by Mrs. Garvin's grandson, Mr. Hansen E. Wakeman. Interment will follow in the Union Cemetery with grandsons and nephews serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Martha "Edna" Garvin passed away Saturday afternoon, August 15, 2009, at Sumny Springs Health and Rehab. She was born July 21, 1917, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of William Grover Trammell and Lela Adelle (Meers) Trammell. She had resided in Hopkins County since 1971. She married David N. Wakeman, Sr. on November 19, 1938, in Henderson County. He preceded her in death in 1950. She then married Silas E. "Jack" Garvin on February 15, 1951 in Rockwall County. He preceded her in death in 1987.
Mrs. Garvin was a 1988 recipient of the Golden Poet Award, given by the World of Poetry Society and the author of a book of poetry and short stories. She was a member of the Country Baptist Church where she had previously served as church secretary. Mrs. Garvin held many hobs throughout her long life, but the most important jobs included being a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include: three sons, Ramon C. Wakeman of Frankston, David N. Wakeman, Jr. of Pensacola, Florida and Richard E. Wakeman of Sulphur Springs; seven grandchildren, Ramona Wakeman Hall, Christopher J. Wakeman both of Raleigh North Carolina, Angel Wakeman Williams of Odessa, Jack E. Wakeman, David Wakeman, III, both of Pensacola, Florida, Wende Wakeman of Conroe and Hansen E. Wakeman of Sulphur Springs; 14 great-grandchildren and an extended family of four stepdaughters and stepgrandchildren, whom she loved as if they were her very own. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mary Barton in 1983.
