Mary Frances Watson — a life well lived
Mary Frances Watson, age 83, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, passed away peacefully at Christus Mother Frances Hospital on Thursday, May 21, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 20, 2026, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Born on June 24, 1942, in Sulphur Springs, Mary Frances was the daughter of Lawrence “Shorty” France and Connie Shrode France. She grew up in Sulphur Springs, where she formed lifelong friendships and developed the strong sense of family and community that remained with her throughout her life.
After graduating from high school with honors — where she served as sophomore class president, head cheerleader, and a member of the band, among other activities — she attended The University of Texas at Austin, where she was an active member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Mary Frances married Art Romack on March 16, 1963, and together they built a home and raised three boys in Grand Prairie, Texas. She devoted herself to her family and was deeply involved in her children’s lives and activities. She was an integral part of the team that created the Grand Prairie Soccer Association and became a steady and encouraging presence not only for her own children, but for many of their friends — who often referred to her as Mom and kept in touch with her throughout their lives.
Alongside raising a family, Mary Frances worked for many years in the DFW area as an accounting and office manager, building lasting friendships everywhere she went. She was active in tennis, loved gardening, and had a remarkable gift for creativity and homemaking. She enjoyed restoring old furniture, decorating homes with warmth and beauty, and preparing holidays and family gatherings that became treasured traditions. Her children still remember her decorating Christmas trees twice her size and painting soaring walls in the family home on College Street with determination and care.
Like all lives, Mary Frances’ life was not without hardship. The untimely loss of her firstborn son, Richard Benedict Romack, was a sorrow she carried quietly. Yet she rarely complained and instead devoted herself to encouraging, helping, and comforting others through their own struggles. She possessed an unassuming strength — loving, gracious, and kind, yet deeply strong-willed when something truly mattered to her.
In April 1992, Mary Frances married Fred Watson in Dallas, Texas, beginning a joyful chapter that lasted more than three decades. Through their marriage, Mary Frances was grateful to expand her family to include Mark, Jeff, and Branden Watson. Together, Mary Frances and Fred built a successful business and shared a life marked by hard work, perseverance, friendship, and love.
Even in busy seasons, Mary Frances never lost her appreciation for the simple joys of life — especially dancing with Fred, a pastime for which the two were well known and admired. Together they enjoyed church and community activities, bridge club gatherings, gardening, and time spent with friends, neighbors, and their growing family. Nothing brought Mary Frances greater joy than her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and followed proudly through every season of life.
Mary Frances will be remembered for her kindness, warm heart, quiet strength, unwavering devotion to family, and the way she made people feel welcomed, encouraged, and loved.
Mary Frances is survived by her sons, Mark Romack (Leigh Ann), Scott Romack, and Chris Romack (Kellie); her sister, Patsy Jones; her grandchildren, Christian, Sarah, Matthew, Bailey, and Peyton Romack; and her step-children, Mark, Jeff, and Branden Watson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband and best friend, Fred Watson; and her son, Richard Benedict Romack.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Meal-A-Day Program of Sulphur Springs.
