Funeral services for Ray "Mr. Ray" Vaughn, age 83, of Sulphur Springs will be conducted at Davis Street Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m., October 3, 2010, with Brother Tommy Hall and Dr. Mike Harmon officiating. A military graveside service, under the direction of the Hopkins County Military Coalition will follow at the City Cemetery. The Woodmen of the World will also be participating. Serving as pallbearers will be Gary Odom, Lee Teetes, Donny Harris, Gene Clark, Gerald Heard and Kurt Cheatham. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Cheatham, Monty Tipps, Bill Reese, Sam Speed, Wendell Crist, Buddy Gore, Cody Sanders, Kim Waller and John Harris. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
Ray "Mr. Ray" passed away at his residence, Thursday morning, September 30, 2010. He was born in Hopkins County, on February 9, 1927, the son of Gilbert Vaughn and Dora (Price) Vaughn. He married Connie Corene Lee on February 9, 1948. She preceded him in death in February, 1991. He married Sharlyn Powell on September 7, 1991; she survives. "Mr. Ray" owned Ray's BBQ for over 50 years and he was a retired dairyman. He was a member of Davis Street Baptist Church since 1965 and served as chairman of the deacons for over 25 years. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World for over 50 years and was president at the time of his death, having served many years as president. He was also president of the Hereford Association. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Other survivors include: four daughters, Toynia Jones and husband, Kyle, Shanda Beck and husband, Tommy, Linda Mathes and husband, Bryan, all of Sulphur Springs, Theressa Kothmann and husband, Dr. Kirk Kothmann, of Bulverde; son, John Powell and wife, Lawana of Sulphur Springs; grandchildren, Delena and Eric Pipper, Rocky and Jenny Vaughn, Lacey and David Norton, Lindsay Temples, Brandon and Candice Beck, Justin Jones, LaShay Powell, Shane Powell, Jeremy Bennett, Whitney Kothmann, Stephanie Kothmann, Seanda Westbrook, Kimberly Mathes, Kyles Mathes and Kacie Mathes and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Lanny Vaughn; daughter, Susan Bennett grandson, Chris Bennett; two brothers, Raymond Vaughn and Jimmy Vaughn and sister, Sybile Caudle.
