Funeral services for Pauline McLeroy Carpenter Grayson will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Brother Charlie Sickles, a longtime family friend, will officiate. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Cemetery.
Pauline passed away Monday in San Antonio at the age of 85. She was born March 21, 1925 in Rains County to W.B. and Mattie McLeroy. She married Robert Hedrick "Tiny" Carpenter in 1943 and had three children together. Mr. Carpenter preceded her in death in 1972. She remarried H.H. Grayson in 1984. He preceded her in death in 1993.
Pauline worked as a machinist at Rockwell International for 28 years. She also owned and managed rental homes in Sulphur Springs for many years.
Retirement didn't slow Pauline down. She won awards for her gardening, paintings and crochet work. From sunrise to sunset, she filled her days with the things she enjoyed most like cooking for her family and neighborhood kids.
"We weren't her grandchildren, but she treated us like we were," Justin Sickles, a family friend said after her passing. She also adored her Chihuahua, Peaches, who she would take for picture day at Davis Street Baptist Church where she was a longtime member.
Pauline was preceded in death by a son, David Carpenter, and a grandson, David Starr. She is survived by daughters Katherine Starr and husband Marvin of Tyler and Paula Dangler and husband Ed of San Antonio. Two sisters also survive, Moveline "Mollie" Hurley of Abilene and Jo McCain of Sulphur Springs. Surviving grandchildren include Greg Carpenter of Sulphur Springs, Tammy Polley of Tyler, Donna Jenkins of Tyler, Jason Sickles of Dallas and Jacob Sickles of Wilmington, N.C. She had eight great grandchildren.
