Sue Walker

Graveside service for Sue Walker, age 92, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Restlawn Memorial Park with Roger Burks Officiating and Corey Ponder, Chris Ponder, Matt Ward, J.R. Sims, Roger Burks and Gary Burks serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held thirty minutes prior to the service at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home. Mrs. Walker passed away at Carriage House Manor on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Bethel Sue Burks Walker was the fifth of six children born to John Hubert Burks and Opal Lou (Hatfield) Burks on April 20th, 1934, in Sunny Slope, Northern Hopkins County, Texas. She was a 1951 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School. In June of that year, she went to work as a dental assistant for Dr. Royal Ramey. On December 24, 1952, she married Leiland Walker, and they were married for seventy-two years. Sue was a member of First Baptist Church since 1967. She was active in Girl Scouts, March of Dimes, United Way, and the campaign for Hopkins County Memorial Hospital. She was active in Mother’s Culture Club, Dial Study Club, Jr. Waverly Club, Women’s Forum, and Women’s Bldg. Sue loved reading, gardening, and playing bridge, but most of all she loved caring for her family & friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra Ponder; son-in-law, Vic Ponder; two grandsons, Corey Ponder and wife, Leah, and Chris Ponder.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, brothers, Thomas Burks, Travis Burks, Wylie Burks, sisters, Modene Sims, and Vera Glossup.

The family wants to express their gratitude to the amazing staff at Carriage House Manor and to Choice Hospice for their care and guidance.

In lieu of flowers donations may be given to First Baptist Church or the charity of your choice in her honor.
