Wayne Murphy passed away at his home surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 after a two and a half year courageous battle with cancer.
He was born December 5, 1937, in Winnsboro, Texas, to Raymond and Lula Murphy. On October 6, 1956, Wayne married the love of his life, Betty Sue, Gilbreath in Como, Texas. He served proudly in the United States Army in the early 1960's. Having only recently moved to Palestine, Wayne lived most of his life in Hopkins County. He was co-owner of The Appliance Hospital in Sulphur Springs for 30 years until his illness forced his retirement earlier this year.
Mr. Murphy was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church having served in many leadership positions over the years, including deacon and trustee. He had a lifelong love of music, enjoyed singing in the adult choir as well as playing tuba in the church orchestra.
Wayne was a devoted husband, daddy, granddad (O-daddy), brother, uncle and friend. He had a gentle smile and kind spirit which he shared unselfishly with family and friends alike. Wayne was compassionate and spent his entire life being a servant helper to others. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Murphy of Palestine; daughter, Charlisa Goodman and husband, John of Palestine; granddaughter, Emily Goodman, of Denton, Texas; brother, Jerry Murphy and wife, Brenda, of Tyler, Texas; sister-in-law, Lela Hollis of Sulphur Springs, several nieces and nephews and many friends whom he considered family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Lula Murphy.
