Funeral services for Wendell Sapaugh, age 79, of Sulphur Springs will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Lewis and Tommy Johnston officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park, with Randy Hall, G. W. Gibbins, Don Deaton, Wayne Hamrick, Harold Spoof Cheatham, John Folmar, Gordon Ford and Wayne Galyean serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be John Sharber, Charlie McDaniel, Johnny Dobson, Johnny Motes, Kenneth Hyde, Frances Pogue and Joe Pogue, Busy Men's Bible Class, First Baptist Church money counters, City National Bank Board of Directors and the Sulphur Springs Lions' Club. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at First Baptist Church Spence Chapel .
Wendell Sapaugh passed away Sunday morning, July 10, 2011 at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano. He was born in Sulphur Springs on July 29, 1931, the son of T. T. "Cowboy" Sapaugh and Jessie Clyde (Kennedy) Sapaugh. He married Helen Ruth Shelton in Sulphur Springs on March 8, 1963; she survives. He was retired from the City of Sulphur Springs where he served as Finance Director. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church, former city councilman and mayor in 1967, also on the board of directors of City National Bank, a member of Lions Club since 1954, music leader of Busy Men's Bible Class and a member of Men of Texas Choir . He was also involved in Little League Baseball and he was an avid Baylor Bears and Texas Rangers fan.
Other survivors include: daughter, Julie Sapaugh of Waco; son, Don Sapaugh and wife, Jill, sister; Jackie McGlamery all of Sulphur Springs and grandchild, Anna Kate Sapaugh. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Missions and/or First Baptist Church Building Fund.
